Classroom Rules and Procedures

Welcome to Mrs. Febbraio’s English class!! I am thrilled to be your teacher and look forward to an exciting year together. This year you will be learning how to write more effectively, read with deeper understanding, and express yourself with confidence. In addition, we will be working together to create a safe classroom community where every person is a valued member of the class and feels free to express his or her opinions and ideas. 

Classroom Procedures

1. Entering Class: When you come into class, prepare yourself for learning by quietly taking your seat, looking at the board or Schoology for directions, writing your homework down in your agenda, and beginning the warm-up.
2. Supplies: It is expected that you bring your binder, agenda, a book to read, and a pencil to class every day. When we are reading a novel together in class, you will be asked to bring that with you as well. 
3. Getting out of your desk:  If you need to get out of your desk for something, please wait until I am not teaching and then ask permission. 
4. Restroom use: If you need to use the restroom during class, the time to do so is during individual work time. You will not be allowed to use the bathroom during group work, when I am teaching, or the first or last ten minutes of class. Try to use the restroom before joining our live conference.
5. Homework: Homework assignments and due dates will be given to you at the beginning of class. Write the assignment and due date in your agenda and put the homework in your homework folder. You will turn your homework into the appropriate assignment in Schoology. 
6. Absences: When you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask me for the work you missed. I cannot track you down for missing assignments because there are too many of you and only one of me! ☺ If you missed an assignment with a worksheet or other materials, you can find them on Schoology. 
7. Call to Attention: I will raise my hand to get your attention. This is your signal to immediately stop talking and focus your attention on me. When you see that I have my hand raised, raise your hand as well, so the rest of the class will catch on quickly. 
8. Dismissal from Class: Before you are allowed to leave class, you need to have all of your items organized and homework written down. You must wait for me to dismiss you before you can leave class.

Classroom Expectations

1. Do your best: Working hard and doing your best, even on the small things, prepares you for future challenges and gives you a sense of pride in your abilities.
2. Make no excuses: Making excuses is inexcusable (unless, of course, it’s a valid one)! Be accountable and responsible for your actions, admit when you make a mistake, and decide to do better next time.
3. Take learning risks: True learning does not take place until you fail a few times first. 
4. Use positive language: Before speaking, think about the impact your words will have on others.
5. Ask for help: Ask for help, as many times as it takes, until you understand the material and feel confident.
6. Be polite: Don’t forget to use the magic words you learned in kindergarten—“please”, “thank you”, and “excuse me”. Secondly, if I am talking to another student or teacher, don’t interrupt. Wait until I am done speaking and then ask your question.
7. Treat your classmates, teachers, and staff with respect and kindness: 
   There are always opportunities to be kind to others; don’t pass them up!
   Respect is a two-way street—you must give it to receive it.
8. Practice safety: Be mindful of your surroundings, and keep your hands and feet to yourself. 
9. Be open-minded: You will be exposed to many different perspectives and ideas in the books we read and discussions we have. Be open to learning from the experiences of others even if they differ from your own.
10. Have fun while you learn!
