English 7  

English 7 concentrates on basic grammar skills, reading comprehension, and vocabulary building. Students will be completing units on literature, poetry, grammar and writing mechanics, non-fiction reading comprehension, and basic research skills. Students will write often, focusing on audience, purpose, and organization.  There will be several projects and oral presentations required throughout the year.  Time management and effective study skills will be stressed.

English 8

English 8 reinforces and builds on the grammar and punctuation, writing, reading, and vocabulary skills learned in English 7. Throughout the year you will complete units on poetry and poetry writing, The Diary of Anne Frank, “Flowers for Algernon,” various short stories, non-fiction article analysis, and various other subjects.  In addition, students will write frequently, focusing on audience, purpose, and organization. 

 

 

Reading

The overall goal of the 7th grade reading/writing program is designed to expand the student's reading and writing skills through the use of various forms of literature and follow up activities.  Various novels and short stories are used to teach the wide variety of reading skills necessary to be successful.  These skills are taught within the context of the stories read by the students.  Supplemental activities are utilized to reinforce these skills.

Study Skills

Study skills is a specially designed study hall to teach students how to study for tests/quizzes, provide additional academic support , organizational support, and monitor IEP goals. 

Class Expectations

Materials: Each student is expected to bring the necessary materials to class each day. These materials include: a pencil, completed assignments, any homework in which the student may need help, and assignment journal.

Assignments: The assignments for ALL classes are posted on the whiteboard for the week and will remain posted for the duration of the week. It is the responsibility of the student to write the assignment into his/her journal and return the work by the due date.

Attendance: The student is expected to be in his/her assigned seat and have all required materials on their desk ready to begin class when the bell rings.

Classroom Policy: The student is expected to follow ALL of the general rules as set forth in the Freeport Area Middle School Student/Parent Handbook. In addition, the student is expected to follow the classroom rules as posted in Mrs. Pearson’s room and discussed with the students.

Homework: Study skills is a specially designed study hall to teach students how to study for tests/quizzes, provide additional academic support ,organizational support, and monitor IEP goals.

Additional Support: Mrs. Pearson is available after school to provide additional academic support when necessary. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you believe your child requires additional academic support. The student needs to get a pass from Mrs. Pearson in order to leave study hall or bus group to report to 323 for additional help.

Class Rules

All students in Ms. Pearson’s class must follow all Freeport Area Middle School rules. In addition, all classroom rules must be followed to provide the most supportive learning environment for all students:

1. Be Prompt – You must be on time for class. This means pencils must be sharpened, you are in your seat when the bell rings, and materials are out on your desk. If you are late 3 times without a hall pass, you will receive detention. Please use the restroom before or at the end of the class. You will not be permitted to leave the room without your assignment journal for a hall pass. DO NOT interrupt instruction to use the pass unless it is an emergency.

2. Be Prepared – You should always bring your ALL notebooks, folders, assignment journal, and writing utensils with you.

3. Be Polite – Talking out, being out of your seat, “poking fun,” or any other interruptions will not be tolerated. You must respect other’s opinions, and raise your hand to speak. Remember that no one likes to be interrupted and everyone’s opinion is valuable. You must also never touch anything that is not yours, nor deface your desk or books, which you are responsible for if they are damaged.
